[-empyre-] The PANIC principle

Hello Everybody,
I am Tinni and I am a research engineer working on the PANIC project. PANIC
stands for Preservation services Architecture for New media and Interactive
Collections. PANIC is many things but I will start by saying what it is not.
PANIC is not a digital repository but a system that monitors a digital
repository using the metadata associated with the objects in the repository,
it is not collection management system being restricted only to executing
preservation actions on the items and their metadata. PANIC's purpose is the
link the preservation needs of a curatorial organisation with preservation
services that are out there. We chose to go down this road because we have
found that there already exists services, registries that while alone do not
solve the preservation problem, collectively they go a long way towards very
effectively addressing the issues. So PANIC can be thought of as a medium by
which a curatorial organisation can reap the benefits of a wide range of
products and services offered by a range of different organisations without
have to approach these organisations separately. Further details on PANIC
can be found at http://metadata.net/panic/.
